Amniocentesis - The Facts, the Fiction & More!

 

Prenatal Diagnosis is a medical screening that focuses on early detection of problems in the pregnant mother's womb. It is done before problems with the baby occur and is very essential. The various tests covered include physical examinations of the abdomen, vagina, breasts, and cervix to detect problems like ectopic pregnancy, breech presentation, congenital anomalies, etc.

Prenatal diagnosis involves various tests for detecting abnormalities in the growth and development of the fetus and amniotic fluid. A variety of tests is conducted to screen for congenital heart defects, anomalies in the functioning of the thyroid gland, placental growth problems, maternal infections, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hypercoagulability. Other factors that increase the risk of developing fetal abnormalities during pregnancy are smoking, drinking alcohol, taking birth control pills, and having your first child. Prenatal diagnoses are usually performed during routine checkups or at your home health checkup.

A prenatal diagnosis is considered to be completed once a series of tests and examinations have been completed and your doctor has determined that there is a high risk of having problems with your developing baby. These include: amniocentesis, fetal scan, orchograms, and MRIs. Amniocentesis is one of the most commonly used test for detecting gestational diabetes and for detecting problems in the amniotic fluid. Fetal scan and MRI scans are also often used to detect conditions in the developing baby.

Amniocentesis is the process of extracting the fluid from the amniotic sac that surrounds the developing fetus. During this procedure, the fluid is studied under a microscope to reveal any abnormalities that would suggest an ectopic pregnancy or other type of dangerous situation. Another procedure, called a Placenta Insemination, is often done to determine if you have a possible problem with your pregnancy. When the placenta is removed, the pregnancy can continue. A false pregnancy can sometimes be caused by placenta previa, where the placenta remains in the uterus and the baby develops inside it.

Once your doctor has obtained a positive result from a prenatal screening test, he or she may proceed with a detailed medical examination. One of these tests is called a genetic test, and it looks for abnormalities on the chromosomes of both the mother and the baby. This is the best way to determine whether you have a problem with your chromosomes or not.

Some people falsely think that a prenatal diagnosis will definitely tell them if they have congenital anomalies or problems with their unborn child. However, having a negative Prenatal Diagnosis does not mean that you have a problem with your unborn child. It just means that there is an issue in the mother's pregnancy which needs to be addressed. There are some common causes for this type of problem.

Many times, problems occur in pregnancies when a woman has her first or second baby. Although these children often carry small amounts of the Down Syndrome Virus, many times these babies are still carrying normal and healthy pregnancies. If the mother has a positive Prenatal Diagnosis and the doctor discovers that these babies have genetic anomalies, it is possible to remove the defective cells from the fetus. However, this must usually be done with a traditional surgery, and is generally considered very dangerous to the unborn child.

Another reason why a positive Prenatal Diagnosis may indicate something else entirely is that, if the baby is truly infected with a contagious disease, it can cause serious harm to the mother's health when the disease reaches full maturity. This would indicate that an amniocentesis, or pregnancy test, is really a positive sign that something other than a normal pregnancy is occurring. For example, if you were positive on a urinalysis test and then had a C-section, then it is likely that you had an ectopic pregnancy.
